Self-Directed Project

WHY IS
NETFLIX
SO
SUCCESSFUL

Introduction
In this self-directed project for MUIDS economics class, I chose to research about Netflix's success. I picked this topic because I'm a subscriber myself and I'm always watching Netflix. I see that more and more people start to watch Netflix and that the company continues to grow consistently with a numerous release of contents which made me come up with the question "Why Is Netflix So Successful? I was curious about Netflix's way and strategy to the success. This website will provide the information about Netflix and the factors that have contributed Netflix to be the leading streaming service. As well as their marketing strategy and impact on different aspects. The content on this webpage consists of the products which are infographics that will help readers understand the topic more, learning process journal with my research summary, and my reflection on this project.

Final Reflection
For this self-directed project, I picked Netflix as my topic with the question, “Why is Netflix so successful ?” or “How did they become successful?” The reason why I chose this topic is that I’m a Netflix subscriber myself and it’s the website I visit very frequently. I also see that more people have chosen to subscribe to Netflix including my friends and Netflix has been the topic on social media for quite some time now. It has been apart of our culture and it has changed the ways we consume entertainment. I decided to use this opportunity to learn about how Netflix became the leading streaming site in the world. I looked at the strategies that made them successful. The strengths of this topic are that there is a lot of information and statistics on the internet and it is quite easy to understand and predictable. However, the weaknesses of this topic is that there are some negative results of Netflix like the health impact, or the reduction of contents which is kind of contrast to my topic of researching the things that made it successful and there is too much information since Netflix has been one of the popular topics in the entertainment industry. The things I might’ve done differently is how I summarize the information and come up with the goals on each day because I felt like my goals are not straightforward enough and there is some information that might not be the actual answer to the research.
My first process for this topic was to draw a mind map of main ideas of the things that can contribute to Netflix’s success using my marketing skills and personal knowledge. Then, I write down what I need to research and then set the goals for each day such as, how it started, what strategy did they use, how are they different from the competitors. The most successful part was probably the website and infographic. I felt happy with the outcomes and the product came out very nice which is worth it for the time that I’ve spent. However, the most difficult part was probably the researching process since there was so many information and I have to summarize the main ideas. If I will be doing this project again, the first thing I would do is plan to organize the work and plan to learn without wasting time. I would try to finish the work a week before the exam.
My individual strength is that I’m very dedicated myself into the work when I'm focused and every time I do work, it has to look beautiful all together with the cleanness and creativity even though I’m late for work submission. The weakness is that I was distracted by other things while I’m doing this project since there is so much work on the last month of the school year and sometimes I didn’t organize my time wisely. The strategy I could use to improve my weaknesses is to plan to work and use the time wisely, as well as not to get distracted by other things and the surroundings. I would use my free time to do research on Netflix instead of watching it. The ESLOs that relates to this project is strategic learners by using technology to do the research and innovative thinkers on using technology to create the quality infographic.
