Thai Language & Culture

Quarter 1

In the first quarter, we’ve learned about the fundamental of Thai language from Sound System or Phonetics, this topic is about the organs of speech, the process of consonants, vowels and how we pronounce the words, which made us understand more about the pronunciation. Furthermore, we've learned about Word Formation. This shows me that words can be separated to many morphemes, which leads to different types of words. Lastly, we’ve learned about Syntax and Sentence Analysis. We analyzed the sentence in both Thai and English language to know how it was constructed.

Quarter 2

Thai language is one of the essential subjects we should take in school as Thai civilians because it’s our native language. We use The Thai language everyday life to communicate with people and we should know how to use it correctly and how it was constructed.

During this quarter, we’ve learned about Language for Communication, how to use language for communication and also how to expressed language using in the context of youth slang that is being used in the present day, which is separated into four categories. We also learned to analyze sentences from articles and how they're related, in both English and Thai language. There are many activities in this quarter, for example, the competition between each group in the GAT article analysis battle.

From the result, I think that this topic is not very difficult, only if you understand how to analyse the sentences. I tried to participate and understand more in this quarter and I think have a better improvement.

Quarter 3

In this quarter, we've studied about types of literature, which are poetry, prose, drama, non-fiction, and essay, also like the meaning, purpose, and history of Thai literature, and we also practice our debating skills.

First, we've learned about Thai literature, which was Man's heart (หัวใจชายหนุ่ม), The Story of Vessantara, กัณฑ์มัทรี and เวตาล. We were assigned into 4 different groups, each group will be responsible for one different literature.  We had to make a poster explaining the stories, and present it to the class.

My group was responsible for หัวใจชายหนุ่ม, we made a huge poster with information explaining the meaning, purpose, and idea of the literature, and we presented to our classmates also did a play of this story. In addition, we have to make a quiz about this literature for our classmates to test their understandings.

After the presentation, the opposite group will ask us questions, if we can't answer the question, we have to do the pie face game. Each group had to follow the same procedures and then debate about their assigned topics.

Furthermore, every group had to do 2 debates with the other two groups. My group got the topic รักต่างวัยไปไม่รอด and การโกหกทำได้ถ้าทำให้คนสบายใจ, we separate the members to 2 groups. I had to debate about การโกหกทำได้ถ้าทำให้คนสบายใจ. I, Ta, and Mini were the representatives for the opponent group, meaning that we have to argue and disagree about the topic.

In conclusion, the debate was very challenging to me and I didn't do well, but I will try to improve our skill in the future. This related to ESLOs in innovative thinkers by being creative and original on creating our poster, strategic learners by planning without wasting our time, articulate communicators by telling what we understand to other groups, and leaders for the future by working together as a group.

Quarter 4

In this quarter, we were separated randomly into four groups. My group consisted of Me, Neno, Belle, Pat, Kun and Time. We created an academic paper and play this game called 'Catch Me If You Can'. This subject give us the opportunity to share the idea with people in the group and help us improve our skills in academic writing, speaking and also as learning how to build teamwork.

For our research report, our group topic was about the differences between men and women's socialization. It is an academic research report, so we had to do a lot of research from different reliable sources. Everyone in your group has their own duty in doing the report. We had to paraphrase from the information we found. This took us about 2-3 days to make since it is quite hard for us. I think it is very important to know how to write a research report because we will be writing these a lot in the future.

Then, we played 'Catch Me If You Can' for two weeks. It is a game that intended to encourage persuasive public speaking, grabbing listeners' attention, and critical thinking. First, we were assigned to write our most memorable experience of our lives in post-it notes and then tell the story to friends in class. Then, we had to wrote one secret that no one knows of each member down and then the teacher will pick one from the group. Every member has to tell the story in their way to make others believe that the secret story is theirs. It is a very new and exciting activity for me because we got to listen to interesting stories our friends tell and then try to guess who is the owner of the story. If we guess wrong, we will lose our group points. For my group, we were the first group to tell the story and none of the other groups guesses our group right, so we got many points. This activity made me an Articulate Communicator because I can listen and speak using different methods to gain attention and to make people believe that the story I told is mine.

Lastly, for our teacher, Mr Rodsak Saengkaew. He is a very fun and kind teacher. He has a different and interesting way of teaching us. To me, this class is the best Thai class I've ever experienced.
